The Special Care Unit employs a wide variety of medical professionals including Registered Nurses specially trained in Critical Care and Rehabilitative medicine, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Respiratory Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Primary Physicians and Nurse Case Managers. To be considered as a member of the Special Care multidisciplinary family of providers, one must meet a very high standard and fit the unique characteristics that make our Employees Special.
Since our units are small and specialized, we filter through and find the medical professionals that we would feel comfortable entrusting with our own loved ones. Given the fragility and medical complexity of our patients, we require staff to have significant experience with acute care, medically complex patients. All Respiratory Therapists are required to have a minimum of 5 years experience working with ventilator dependent patients. Adhering to this requirement for 23 years is the reason we continue to far exceed national benchmarks in ventilator weaning. In addition, all SCU Nurses and Respiratory Therapists are required to be ACLS certified and all Patient Care Technicians are required to have a current BLS certification.
Provided that all of these criteria are met, we then interview our candidates to determine if they have the compassion that we not only value, but require in every member of the Special Care Unit family. As a result of this rigorous hiring process, we are able to provide our patients and their families with a caring, compassionate, and hardworking team of healthcare professionals on their road to recovery. Employees consider it rewarding and a privilege to be part of the Special Care family because they are able to see the results of their collaborative efforts on a daily basis.
